Educational Consultation + KTEA-3 In-depth Screening
A broader educational screening for families who would like more detailed information about their child’s academic skills across reading, written language and maths, together with guidance about appropriate next steps.
Educational Consultation + KTEA-3 In-depth Screening
The screening is delivered by an experienced SPELD SA educator or speech pathologist and combines an educational consultation with six KTEA-3 subtests, providing a broader standardised picture of your child’s academic achievement.

What does the screening include?
Your child will complete six KTEA-3 subtests:
Basic academic skills
• Letter & Word Recognition – looks at your child’s ability to recognise letters and read words
• Spelling – looks at your child’s ability to spell words
• Math Computation – looks at your child’s written calculation skills
Broader academic skills
• Reading Comprehension – looks at your child’s understanding of written information
• Written Expression – looks at your child’s ability to communicate ideas in writing
• Math Concepts & Applications – looks at your child’s understanding and application of mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills
Together, these six subtests provide a broader picture of your child’s academic strengths and areas of difficulty across reading, written language and maths.
What happens at the appointment?
The appointment is 2 hours.
It begins with approximately 30 minutes with the parent or carer to discuss your child’s learning concerns, school history, previous intervention and any relevant assessments.
Your child will then complete the six KTEA-3 subtests. Testing generally takes approximately 60–90 minutes, although this will vary depending on your child’s age and individual needs.
Parents and carers are encouraged to bring relevant school reports or previous psychology, speech pathology or other assessment reports to help provide context.
What do you receive?
Following the appointment, you will receive:
• your child’s results from the six KTEA-3 subtests
• relevant composite results across the areas assessed
• a more detailed written report explaining the results and highlighting areas of relative strength and difficulty
• practical recommendations and suggested next steps
• a 10-minute follow-up phone call to discuss the results and answer questions
Who is this service for?

• you would like objective information to help guide intervention and educational support
• you are considering whether further assessment or referral to another professional may be appropriate
If you are primarily seeking a brief snapshot of basic skills in reading, spelling and maths, the KTEA-3 Brief Achievement Screening may be more appropriate.

Important information about KTEA-3 screening
KTEA-3 screening provides information about your child’s current academic achievement in the areas assessed.
The screening can help identify areas of academic strength and difficulty and inform decisions about intervention, support and whether further assessment may be appropriate.
KTEA-3 screening is not a comprehensive psychoeducational assessment and does not provide a diagnosis of dyslexia, dyscalculia or another specific learning disorder.
