Giving the gift of literacy
Evie, a Year 6 student from Star of the Sea School, who lives with dyslexia, convinced her whole student cohort to support her cause by delivering a heartfelt speech.
Each student had to state their case to support their charity of choice and Evie’s passionate plea, sharing details of her daily struggles with dyslexia, won everyone’s support.
This led to a significant donation to our organisation.
“When we first heard of the donation we were very touched to say the least and we’re incredibly grateful.” Angelik, Literacy & Numeracy Clinic Manager at SPELD SA.
“The donation will mean that more families, who would otherwise be unable to afford the intervention, will have access to the support they require.”
Evie’s teacher Jess says “All the students were able to choose a foundation that spoke to them, and I helped Evie find SPELD SA as she wanted to raise awareness for dyslexia. Evie finds all reading and spelling difficult. However, her incredible sense of self allows her to work immensely hard and excel. She practices reading and learns parts like lines she will perform as she is a keen actress.”
“She stood up in front of our cohort of 75 students and spoke about how unseen dyslexia is, however, it is her superpower and means that she does have to work harder, but that it does not mean she is not clever. She had us all in tears! So her entire cohort voted for her, as her speech was so moving!” Jess, Teacher at Star of the Sea.
Evie and her class were recognised at the end of year assembly where they personally presented the donation to SPELD SA, with Angelik, Manager of SPELD SA’s Literacy & Numeracy Clinic graciously accepting the gift.
Through the SPELD SA Literacy Clinic Bursary, the school’s generous gift will help support low income families to access vital intervention services. In the midst of the cost of living ‘crisis’ and when the demand for this service is so high, this will be such a welcome boost to those families who need it most.
Thank you to the staff and students of Star of the Sea School.
