SPELD SA Phonic Books are speech to print oriented. This means they begin with what children are already familiar with, the sounds of the English language. Sounds are then mapped to written letters.
Each book has been written to reflect the exceptional Sounds-Write scope and sequence and features multiple repetitions of target sound-spelling correspondences. This repetitive practice is crucial for students to orthographically map new words and letter-sound correspondences, gaining fluency and then automaticity.
We are dedicated to helping all children engage with phonic books. Carefully chosen characters, content and settings reflect our local South Australian Indigenous communities.
Stories featuring lovable characters and adventures set across a range of Australian landscapes, these readers provide relatable and engaging stories while encouraging classroom discussion and oral language development.
This engaging set of 10 phonic books introduces and reinforces the sound-spelling correspondences:
/s/, /l/, /or/, /air/, /ue/, /oy/, /ar/, /o/, /d/ and /i/
Designed for Year 1 students, the books are also ideal for middle primary students who need additional exposure and repeated practice of these sound-spelling correspondences as part of targeted literacy intervention.
