At the Blue Level (the fourth level), the stories are longer and feature more tricky words. In addition, all the Jolly Phonics alternative vowel spellings are used, for example ay as in 'day', ea as in 'seat', igh as in 'night', ow as in 'snow', ew as in 'few', ir as in 'girl', aw as in 'straw', oy as in 'boy' and ow as in 'scowl'. As before, light type is used for those few letters that should not be sounded out, such as the b in 'lamb' (but not in the new tricky words, which should already be familiar without this help).
This set contains 6 Inky & Friends book titles, 6 General Fiction and 6 Non-Fiction titles. Each book has four sentences per page, 18 alternative spellings and 61 Tricky Words per book.
The Jolly Readers use controlled vocabulary so children can read words from their knowledge of the letter sounds in Jolly Phonics. The tricky words used are shown at the back of each book.
