Literacy Services FAQ
At the initial session, we use Sounds-Write diagnostics, discuss the individual student’s needs with the parent or caregiver, and highlight the importance of regular homework to support progress.
During one-to-one sessions, students review previously taught code. To keep students engaged, practitioners use a variety of materials such as whiteboards, coloured post-it notes, magnetic letters, duplo blocks with letters, and erasable pens and markers. A student favourite is writing on the tables with whiteboard markers.
The rate at which students progress through the units varies, but we typically find that spending around two weeks per unit is effective. For students with significant learning difficulties, we move at a slower pace and ensure skills are consolidated before progressing to the next unit.
Practitioners tailor sessions to each student’s needs. This may include the use of a wobbly chair to support movement while sitting, therapy putty as a sensory strategy to develop hand strength, and visual schedules to support understanding of time.
- The Literacy Service provides 1:1 intervention focused on building foundational skills for reading and spelling for students of all ages. Sessions are delivered either in person or online. The Literacy Service is staffed by qualified and experienced teachers and led by a speech pathologist.
- The Tutor Service provides greater flexibility, as tutors may attend at a student’s home or school. They can also assist students with developing higher-level skills beyond basic phonics and early maths. SPELD SA tutors are self-employed and may be trained in a range of approaches and programs. SPELD SA screens tutors to ensure they have relevant evidence-based training and experience, and maintain a Working With Children Check.

Yes. We strongly encourage the first session to be delivered face-to-face where possible. Sessions can also be delivered online, providing greater flexibility and convenience for students.
Each lesson is $110 per session. Any homework books required will be at an additional cost.
If you are a SPELD SA member, this will entitle you to receive 5% discount per session as well as 5% discount for essential homework books/materials (excluding bursary families and pre-pay of block).
After each session, payments will be processed automatically through our payment system that evening.
Homework is designed to consolidate the skills taught during the sessions. This usually involves 5–10 minutes practice up to 5 times per week. Students who complete homework will have increased progression within the program.
Parents will receive the workbook required in the second session once your practitioner knows where to start in the program.
Students will be given readers to take home after their second session. We ask that students take care of these readers and return them the following week. If any readers are overdue, lost or damaged, this will be charged at a replacement cost. This charge will be a minimum of $5 or higher if applicable. If the reader is found, the borrower may keep the item if a fine has been paid. No refunds will be given, as it is likely that another copy of the reader has been purchased. Students are permitted to borrow again once their library account is cleared.
We have a simple digital check-in process when you arrive.

You can text the clinic on 0483 931 934 if you’re unable to attend a session or if you’re running late. Your message will go straight to your educator, so they’re directly informed. (Tip: save this number as “SPELD SA Absence Number” in your phone — this is a text-only number).
You will need to have a conversation with your practitioner to discuss your child’s current support. During this discussion, your practitioner will carefully consider the progress your child has made so far, including any improvements in their skills and areas that may still need development. They will also assess whether ongoing services are appropriate and beneficial at this stage, taking into account your child’s individual needs and goals. Based on this, they can provide guidance on the most suitable next steps, including whether to continue, adjust, or conclude services.
