The activities in this book are broadly designed to support students in working towards achieving the following content descriptions from the Australian Curriculum:

  • Yr 3: ACMNA056 Recall multiplication facts of two, three, five and ten; and subsequently
  • Yr 4: ACMNA075 Recall multiplication facts up to 10×10 and related division facts

However, the use of a strategies approach also facilitates the learning of important concepts underlying multiplication and division, such as the commutative property (4 x 6 = 6 x 4) including through the use of an array model, and the inverse relationship between multiplication and division (including fact families).  Students have the opportunity to examine number patterns created through multiplication and hence the properties of factors and multiples.  This approach may also develop the following competencies:

  • Yr 2: ACMNA026 Investigate number sequences, initially those increasing and decreasing by twos, threes, fives and ten from any starting point, then moving to other sequences
  • Yr 2: ACMNA031 Recognise and represent multiplication as repeated addition, groups and arrays
  • Yr 4: ACMNA076 Develop efficient mental and written strategies and use appropriate digital technologies for multiplication and for division where there is no remainder
  • Yr 4: ACMNA174 Investigate number sequences involving multiples of 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9
  • Yr 4: ACMNA081 Explore and describe number patterns resulting from performing multiplication
  • Yr 5: ACMNA098 Identify and describe factors and multiples of whole numbers and use them to solve problems
