SPELD SA Phonic Books are speech-to-print-oriented. This means they begin with what children are already familiar with and the sounds of the English language. Sounds are then mapped to written letters.

Each book is written to reflect the exceptional Sounds-Write scope and sequence and features multiple repetitions of target sound-spelling correspondences. This repetitive practice is crucial for students to orthographically map new words and letter-sound correspondences, gaining fluency and automaticity.

We are dedicated to helping all children engage with phonic books. Carefully chosen characters, content, and settings reflect our local South Australian Indigenous communities.

Stories are filled with lovable characters and captivating storylines. Playing cricket and eating ice cream on the beach, spending time with grandparents, and adventures with treasured pets, are just a few themes. We hope your students can find a sense of familiarity and connection with our phonic books on their literacy journey.

This set of engaging phonic books includes 10 titles that introduce the consonant digraphs and trigraphs and alternate consonant spellings (sh, ch, th, ck, wh, ng, qu, ck, k, c, wh, w, ch, tch) from Unit 11 and the bridging units of the Sounds-Write program suitable for the beginning year of school and grade 1.
