SPECIAL EVENT - Professor Sarah Powell presents: Literacy in Mathematics: Vocabulary and Word Problems

In this full-day workshop, Sarah will focus on two important literacy topics in mathematics. First, she will discuss mathematics vocabulary and how to help students learn the formal language of mathematics. Several strategies that can be used to help students learn mathematics vocabulary will be reviewed.

The focus will then shift to mathematics word problems. Ineffective practices (e.g., tying keywords to operations) and the reasons these are ineffective will be discussed. Time will then be spent on two effective practices – the use of a word-problem attack strategy and the provision of help to students so that they can understand the underlying schemas of word problems. By the end of the workshop, participants will have the confidence to support the mathematics vocabulary and word-problem solving development of the students they work with.
