About

Building Strong Foundations: Mathematical Instruction and Worded Problems

In this workshop, Ali Ellis will explore the key pillars of effective mathematics instruction, focusing on strategies that build deep understanding and long-term success. Participants will examine structured representations, guided practise and conceptual understanding. A particular emphasis will be placed on diagrammatical representations (such as part-part-whole), helping students visualize mathematical concepts and structure their thinking effectively.

The session will also explore solving worded questions, an area where many learners struggle. Common misconceptions, such as relying on keywords to determine operations, will be addressed. Participants will be given practical strategies to help students analyse, visualise and structure problems effectively. Through research-based approaches like schema-based instruction and structured problem-solving, participants will gain tools to support students in tackling worded problems with confidence and accuracy.

This workshop is presented by Ali Ellis, a Numeracy Consultant who has a wealth of experience in teaching mathematics. Having completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Special Educational Needs Co-ordination, she was deeply involved in research-based practices to better understand and address the impacts of dyscalculia on student learning.

    This training is suitable for:
    •    Suitable for all teachers supporting students with numeracy in Kindy - Year 6
    •    Suitable for Early Career Teachers (ECT)
    •    Suitable for Pre-Service Teachers

We also offer in-school training. Request quote.
